In January, Lamons published the first major Gasket Handbook revision in over 30 years. This major overhaul of the Gasket Handbook includes modernized information gathered over the last three decades and consolidated it for an easy-to-use guide for proper gasket and bolting selection, along with industry references, calculations and details. The Gasket Handbook can be used for any level of user. It introduces those new to the field to the terms of the industry, different types of gaskets and bolting, and technical data. The Gasket Handbook is also a good refresher for veterans of the industry and is a very useful tool when searching for gasket and bolting information particular to a specific system.
As part of a continuing series of excerpts from our Gasket Handbook, we begin with a summary of what you can find within.
Introduction, Chapter 1 & Chapter 4
The introduction includes, but is not limited to, topics such as, "Why gaskets are used?", "Effecting a seal", and "Flange finishes". These and other topics in the introduction give a general perspective to sealing objectives, flange type and characteristics, and material considerations.
Chapter 1 of the Gasket Handbook covers a wide array of gasket types from non-metallic to semi-metallic to metallic seals that you can find readily available in the industry. This section provides comprehensive charts of standard dimensions of seals (Soft, Spiral Wound, Kamm profiled, Corrugated, RTJ) for most all flange types including: ASME B16.5, DIN, AWWA C207, Slip-On, ASME B16.47 (includes series A and B for applicable types), RTJ, and also British and Japanese standards. For soft gaskets, detailed information has been included regarding material properties, to aid in gasket selection.
Lamons specialty items including our WRI-HTG, WRI-LP and Inhibitor gaskets are a few of the engineered products you can find information on in this section, that have been initiated and designed by end-users like yourself to fit specific needs. Another well-received design utilizing the Kamm profile design found in Chapter 1 is our Kammpro ACHE gasket. These are, in a sense, washers that have been kammprofiled to enhance the sealability of air-cooled heat exchanger plugs.
Finally, ring type joint gaskets and specialty machined seals are discussed at the conclusion of the chapter. The section includes R, BX, RX, SBX and the SRX for metal-to-metal seals and high pressure applications. It also includes information on Lamons engineered products such as the Kammpro-ORJ, Kamm-PEG and Kammpro adapter (RTJ to RF flange). The high performing gaskets combine the kammprofiled design on the effective sealing areas on the RTJ gaskets with a pliable material which offers a lower seating stress, a higher tightness level, and gives the ability to conform to flange imperfections.

Chapter 4, the appendix, incorporates numerous useful and well-used tables to help in gasket and bolting optimization including; chemical compatibility of popular media with metal and common non-metallic sealing materials, temperature limits, a galvanic resistance corrosion chart, and fastener details. Other charts of notable interest are; temperature and pressure conversion charts, hardness conversion charts, and pipe dimensions and weights.
Chapter 2 & Chapter 3
Gasket installation is paramount in the process of creating an effective seal that will perform to the highest expectations of its intended design. Chapters 2 & 3 of the Gasket Handbook provide the necessary steps, hands on solutions, and technical data to successfully resolve common scenarios that can be encountered in day to day operations.
The process of taking flanges apart might seem pretty basic, however, it entails more than what is visible to the average eye. When performing this task, the field technician must take necessary steps that will primarily keep him or her safe, deter unnecessary damage to the equipment being serviced, and provide proper lubrication and storage of components if necessary. This same consideration goes for assembling the flanges back together. Keen attention to detail must be applied to the replacement gasket, hardware, and torquing procedures. Information like this is beneficial and useful to field technicians and is readily found in Chapter 2 – Gasket Installation.
Hands on solutions can sometimes mean the difference between spending hours looking for an answer or simply reverting to the Gasket Handbook and utilizing what others have already spent the time and effort to develop for your convenience. If cracked hardened washers might be a cause to a leaking joint, one can only imagine what kind of excessive clamping forces the leaking gasket has been submitted to. Having a problem with a PTFE (Teflon) gasket extruding out of a flange? Consider using a glass-filled PTFE which possesses better cold flow and creep relaxation characteristics that will prevent or minimize this effect entirely. Scenarios like these are everyday occurrences in the gas, petrochemical and energy industries. Our Trouble Shooting section in Chapter 2 covers topics such as this. In addition, Chapter 2 provides comprehensive installation techniques. The Gasket Handbook is an excellent tool of choice when in need of a solution or reference.
Technical data plays a key role in the application and engineering aspect of the gasket industry, with it old processes can be revamped, new processes can be developed and potential ground breaking future technological advances can be discovered. Chapter 3 – Technical and Design Information offers hands on formulas to calculate initial bolt load, operating bolt loads, minimum required bolt area, maximum unit load on the gasket bearing flange surface and detailed sketches which provide insight into the design of certain products. Ever wonder what the difference is between 304SS and 316SS? They look alike and feel the same.
